About Litchfield South Carolina

Just down the coast from Myrtle Beach, Hammock Coast is a peninsula bounded on the west by the Waccamaw River, and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Five rivers join together at the Winyah Bay, and the entire area is laced with black-water rivers, saltwater creeks, pine forests, cypress swamps, and former rice plantations.

Litchfield is a small community located in this region and features a number of attractions for Myrtle Beach vacationers who want to explore the Grand Strand, including the lovely natural Brookgreen Gardens and the Huntington Beach State Park.

One of Litchfield’s biggest attractions is the Litchfield Plantation, a historical plantation adjacent to the Waccamaw River. Established in 1710, with the main home built in 1740, the plantation is rich in history and operates as a Country Inn and private club. The rest of the 500-acre grounds are reserved as an upcoming residential community.

Golf is huge here as well, and lots of resorts will offer countless reasons not to leave. History is also rich, from natives to slaves to distinguished colonial settlers, and you’ll find numerous historical tours by land and by sea.

Other Atrractions in Litchfield and Pawley’S Island:

The Original Hammock Shop was the inspiration for the naming of Hammock Coast, and part of this enterprise is the Hammock Weavers Pavilion where visitors can watch the weaving of a hammock and/or purchase an original. Riverboat Captain John Joshua Ward invented the cool, comfortable, cotton hammock in 1889, and tradition dictates that it must be handwoven according to the high standards of low country craftsmanship. Go to 10880 Ocean Highway or call 843-237-9122.

Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art is held annually in September, with music from a symphony orchestra commingled with jazz, bluegrass, gospel, choral, beach music, blues and big band, held in various venues both inside and outside. Call 843-237-4774.

The Tara Theater at Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort hosts Dino’s TV Variety Show with celebrity guests, a live studio audience, and 90 minutes of music and comedy. Call 843-458-1119.
