The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk

Friday, March 29, 2013 – by OVR Staff
So you’ve come to Myrtle Beach with your family, but perhaps you’re not one who actually likes getting sand between your toes. What to do? How about taking a stroll along our new boardwalk! The new Myrtle Beach Boardwalk stretches for a mile and a half between the 2nd Ave. Pier all the way up to Plyler Park at 14th Ave. North. You’ll pass right by the area in the middle of downtown where the Pavilion amusement park used to be. Of course, there are all the wonderful shops and eateries along the way!

The new Myrtle Beach Boardwalk was built in 2010, ready to welcome a whole new generation of visitors and tourists who make up the face of our wonderful city. For years, the downtown area embodied what people knew Myrtle Beach to be. The Pavilion and all its rides, the Magic Attic and its non-stop concerts and parties for teens in a safe environment, as well as the various restaurants and attractions. Since The Magic Attic, The Pavilion and some other spots are no longer there, it was the perfect opportunity to breathe new life into Myrtle Beach with one of the most fabulous boardwalks anywhere. There’s no shortage of attractions around the boardwalk. One of the best is the brand new SkyWheel. Take a ride in it and get the best view anywhere of the entire Grand Strand. Situated right on the ocean, the view can’t be beat! And don’t forget to have some fun at a brand new miniature golf complex on a historic site—the place where the iconic Chesterfield Inn of the 1930’s used to stand.
Summer is going to be here before you know it, and the new Boardwalk will have lots of family-friendly activities. For the kids, Monday nights will be carnival night and will feature bouncy houses, face painting and lots of other fun activities. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday will feature concerts and as always, a wonderful fireworks show on Wednesdays. Friday nights you will be able to walk the Boardwalk and enjoy the area’s favorite Dixieland band, and on Sundays, you can be enchanted with human statues, acrobatics and even fire shows!
The $6.5 million Myrtle Beach Boardwalk was a massive undertaking for the city but has proven to be money and time well spent. Our downtown area needed a new injection of fresh fun and we’ve received just that with the new Boardwalk! So whether you want to just take a stroll and enjoy the breezes from the ocean or come to have some serious family fun, you will find it all at the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Come and see what it’s all about this year!

There’s More To Myrtle Beach Than Just the Beach!

Sunday, March 31, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Have you ever wondered what there really is to do in Myrtle Beach on a rainy day or a day where you’re just too hot to go to the beach? Well, if you need a break from baking in the sun, then you might find some of these fun ideas just the ticket to go have some fun—Myrtle Beach style! Below are some of our favorite ideas for some good family fun.

•Try the new Myrtle Beach Zip line Adventures! There’s no greater way to catch a great view down Ocean Blvd. than to grab you and your friends for a 40 mph race down the zip lines. Located where the Pavilion used to be at 9th Ave. North, you will fly 600 feet from one tower to the other. You can also choose to do the 60-foot free fall if you’re brave enough! Do them together for $35. At night, it’s really stunning to catch all the laser lights and lights from the nearby SkyWheel!

•The SkyWheel. Not only will you get a spectacular view of the entire Grand Strand from the top of the 20 foot SkyWheel, but you can sit and relax in the air conditioned gondolas for the 12-15 minute ride, which usually includes three revolutions around. The lighting at night is stunning and during the day, the ocean view is magnificent. One other fantastic feature about the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is that it’s designed to accommodate service animals and wheel chairs, so every member of your family or group can enjoy it together. Rides are $12.

•Need a shopping break? Head over to Market Common located on the former Air Force Base. Whether you chill out at Barnes and Noble with a coffee, take in a movie at the Grand 14, or have dinner at one of the fabulous restaurants, you will find a great way to spend the afternoon or evening. And don’t forget the shopping—there’s lots of it at The Market Common!

•If your kids are stir crazy and need something constructive to do, why not try WonderWorks Museum? The upside down museum takes you on a tour for all the senses as they learn about science, nature and music. There are also rides, simulators, and interactive exhibitions that allow them to experience the impossible!

•Finally, take in a great fireworks show at Broadway at the Beach each Tuesday night. You’ll find lots of great music and rides for the kids there as well. It’s a great place to shop, explore or just take a wonderful stroll. There are also zip lines and paddle boats.

Myrtle Beach is full of things to do that go far beyond just going to the beach! During your next vacation, get out and try some of great attractions we have to offer. These are just a few and there are tons more with live shows, water parks, miniature golf courses, but we’ll let you discover Myrtle Beach in your own way this year. Go Myrtle Beach Pelicans!

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 – by OVR Staff
You know Myrtle Beach for the family-friendly amusement parks, golf, and of course the beach, but did you know we also have a great pro baseball team? The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are a fabulous team and recently joined together to align with The Texas Rangers, the American League champions. Although they have this affiliation, nothing will change as far as their roster or name. They also have kept their mascots, which have come to be loved by the fans, young and old alike!

If you’re looking for a great way to spend the day other than swimming or golfing, why not come to the Pelicans field? They have a fabulous area for the kids, and the whole park is designed to enjoy the game in a more intimate setting. The kids will also love Rally Shark and Splash, the mascots who get the fans excited during the game. There’s also Deuce, the English Yellow Lab who makes his rounds mingling with the fans, serves as batboy and also a ball caddy. On winning game nights, Deuce is famous for taking his victory lap around all the bases on the field!

Check out the Myrtle Beach Pelicans website to learn about their Field Of Dreams program, where kids 12 and under can have the chance to be escorted out on the field after the national anthem. They can throw the first pitch, have their ball autographed, among other fun things. They will also see their name in lights on the video board! All of this fun is very affordable and a great alternative to the other traditional outings here in Myrtle Beach. There are lots of home games scheduled for the month of April and May and beyond, so be sure and check them out while you’re here visiting Myrtle Beach!

Get Ready To Get Your Surf on In Myrtle Beach!!

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Bet you didn’t know that among all the other fabulous things to do here in Myrtle Beach, you can also get in some great surfing! While we may not be known as the world’s best surf destination, we definitely have some great waves to catch for the average or beginning surfer. The waves here in Myrtle Beach tend to be more average in size, making it much more easy for those learning to surf, or those who want to enjoy a day of surfing without a difficulty that’s too high.

Typical waves in the summer are around the knee-high mark, making it a great size for relaxed surfing or even body boarding. During the summer months, you can expect lighter winds early in the morning, and shifting winds later around noon to a more southeasterly direction. They winds can be anywhere from 10-20 knots.

The prime time to catch some surfing here in Myrtle Beach is the later summer months, into the fall. You especially won’t be disappointed if the year’s hurricane season was fairly active. In these seasons, the waves are often way over your head!

Many people often ask why the waves here in Myrtle Beach aren’t as impressive as some other areas, but looking at a map will give you the answer. You’ll find that Myrtle Beach is actually an island, separated from the continental shelf slightly. This makes our seascape more of a bay type area. The waves become more powerful the closer the seashore is to the continental shelf.

If you are learning to surf, Myrtle Beach is a perfect place! And while you can catch some great waves here, if you want more action with more difficulty, head down to Folly Beach in Charleston and see the difference. It’s just a short drive from Myrtle Beach, and you could enjoy the history and other attractions of that area and still get back to your condo in short order. The seashore in Charleston is not a bay area like Myrtle Beach, so the waves tend to be bigger there.

We might not ever be Hawaii or Fiji when it comes to being a big surfing destination, but Myrtle Beach does offer lots of fun for those wanting a laid back and fun surfing experience! Bring your kids, a board, some fins, and come get your surf on here in America’s favorite beach! If you need more info about the wave action here in Myrtle Beach, check out

Protecting Your Cash While on Vacation In Myrtle Beach

Friday, May 17, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Have you ever thought about how to protect your cash while on your Myrtle Beach vacation? Well, fortunately there are more convenient ways to carry cash, but these days, it’s all about the debit card, rather than carrying copious amounts of cash. I think we’ve all heard a story or two about a newly arrived tourist checking in his hotel, unpacking, and then going out for a dinner or a quick errand. Upon his return, he discovers that valuables and money left behind are now gone. We usually blame the maids in these cases, but really it could be anyone. You wouldn’t leave money lying around your house when several outside people have keys to the house would you? Well, that’s exactly what people do everyday in hotels. It’s important to keep in mind that several hotel staff people have access to your room and can get in whenever needed. For this reason alone, you should always follow the cardinal rule of vacation—NEVER leave cash in your hotel room!

Whenever possible, skip the cash and carry your debit card instead. Our society has pretty much been revolving around debit bankcards for a long time now, so this is by far the safest way to go. Banks are offering more ways than ever to protect against I.D. fraud and theft, so educate yourself on the steps to take should anything happen to your card. Also, there are ATM machines virtually everywhere now, so you can always withdraw some cash when needed. Keep in mind, however, that there are usually small charges for using ATM machines that do not belong to your home bank. These charges generally range from $1.50 to $3.00.

There’s always the old standby of travelers checks! They still spend like cash money and they are safe because they require two signatures—one when you get them dispensed to you and another matching signature at the time of purchase. Your bank can issue travelers checks free of charge in most cases.

Finally, if you do carry cash around, don’t carry a lot of it at one time. Keep it in a plastic bag inside your shoe if you’re not wearing flip-flops, or you can get a money belt so the cash is on your person at all times, rather than a pocketbook that can be left sitting around. There are people who prey on unsuspecting tourists, so don’t let it happen to you! Best advice here is to carry as little cash as possible and keep your debit and credit cards close to your body. Know what to do in the case of theft and remember that the sooner you report it, the more likely you will be to recover a stolen credit card.

Myrtle Beach is known for being a safe destination, but like any other tourist destination, there are plenty of people out there who will jump at the chance to steal your hard earned money, so don’t give them any opportunity. Follow these simple steps and enjoy your Myrtle Beach vacation!

How To Save Money on Your Myrtle Beach Vacation

Friday, May 31, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Obviously, the first major thing to do when planning a vacation is to figure out where you’re going to stay. That portion tends to take up the biggest part of the budget. But did you know that there really are some great ways to save money on lodging while in Myrtle Beach? Read on to find out how!

Money Saving Tips

1.Look for oceanview, rather than oceanfront. Believe it or not, those few extra feet can mean drastic savings! Many off-ocean rentals still give you great views of the ocean, so you’re not really sacrificing anything, other than a few extra feet to walk to the beach. If you have young kids, a house is a better option due to the space and comfort. It also ensures that they are not in the direct path of the beach without your supervision. Go in together with family or friends and renting a beach house can save you some serious dough!
2.Try to book as early as possible to avoid peak-season rates. This is common sense that applies to about anything tourist related. The earlier you book your condo or house, the better deal you will get. If you are really flexible, you can also save lots of money by booking at the very last minute. The owners are anxious to get their units rented and will cut prices in order to not have it sit empty. Of course, this only works if you can jump in the car and go at the spur of the moment.
3.Make sure you choose a place that has a kitchen and washer/dryer. Doing laundry can get costly, so it’s best to get a unit where you can do this as you go. You will also save a lot by eating in rather than dining out in restaurants all the time!

These are just a few great ways to save on your Myrtle Beach vacation. It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to take a family vacation! Why not save money early and then have extra to enjoy the attractions Myrtle Beach has to offer—you’ll be glad you did.

Check Out Hot Summer Nights. Every Wednesday at 9:30pm, you can see the Grand Strand’s largest firework display and a concert. It all happens at the corner of Mr. Joe White Ave. (10th Ave. N) and Ocean Blvd in downtown Myrtle Beach. The Hot Summer Nights concert series will feature everything from jazz and reggae to country and classic rock. There will also be fun for the whole family with face painting, street performers, stilt walkers and bouncy houses for the kids. It’s all FREE! All the fun begins at 8pm and rolls through midnight.

Broadway at the Beach. This amazing shopping complex and entertainment center has tons to enjoy without spending much.
