The Myrtle Beach Skywheel

Sunday, March 30, 2014 – by OVR Staff
Myrtle Beach has lots of landmarks, but perhaps the most recent one is our best one yet—the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel. It is the second highest ferris wheel in North America and the highest one east of the Mississippi. The highest one goes to the Texas Star Wheel in Dallas. Our SkyWheel boasts a height of 187 feet, and gives absolutely breathtaking views across all of Myrtle Beach like you’ve never imagined! There are 42 gondolas that are made of glass and fully air conditioned and heated so you will be comfortable as you take in the sights, no matter what time of the year. You can enjoy the ride with six other passengers, although you don’t have to sit with passengers who aren’t in your group. But, I’d say that getting to know people at 187 feet in the air is a great way to gain new friends!

Here are a few fun facts you might not know about the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel:

•It was chosen by developers to be built in Myrtle Beach because of our newly redesigned boardwalk, which is among the top 6 in the nation.
•The steel frame of the wheel was constructed in St. Lewis, while the glass gondolas were built in Switzerland.
•TLC made a show about the building of the SkyWheel and installed a TV camera up top to catch all the action as it went up. It was truly a marvel to watch go up!
•There are two other very similar wheels like it in North America, one on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and one in Seattle.
•It can withstand hurricane force winds of up to 135 mph, but the gondolas must be removed, a process which takes more than ten hours.
If you’re looking for something fun to do, you can’t miss the greatest, newest landmark in Myrtle Beach this year! Get your tickets on sight or online and go take a ride to the highest point on the Grand Strand!

Celebrating Spring on the Grand Strand

Monday, April 21, 2014 – by OVR Staff
It’s definitely spring time around here in Myrtle Beach! Although it’s been a strange winter, with weather much colder than we usually see, it has finally warmed back up and the days are absolutely beautiful. Easter was a bit cold and blustery for us southerners, but now, the day after Easter, it’s 70 degrees and the sun is shining without a cloud in the sky. Perfect beach weather! The nights are still cool enough to take a sweater if you go out for a stroll along the water’s edge. If you’re really hard core, (from up north!) then you will probably not even mind venturing in the water. If you ever want to know the difference between a southerner and a northerner, this is the perfect time of year to easily spot them—a true northerner will be seen on the beach in shorts and flip flops even though it’s 55-60 degrees and windy. A true southerner will be right there beside them with a coat and long pants, and possibly a pair of Ugg boots. Not hard to spot them! But one thing is for sure—this is truly one of the most glorious times of the year here in Myrtle Beach. It just doesn’t get much better.

If you are looking for something fun to do with your kids, why not take advantage of our strawberry season and go pick some perfect strawberries! There are several local farms here and a quick search online will tell you all you need to know. You can load as many in your buckets as you want and get them all for a fraction of the cost. It’s a must-do field trip during April in Myrtle Beach!
You can also take advantage of some amazing restaurant deals here, as many are celebrating opening back for the season. They haven’t marked up for summer crowds yet, so this is a great time to try new things. If you really want some fun, come check out Taste of the Coast on May 3 at the new North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex off of Hwy 31. There will be tons of food vendors, inflatables, live music, arts and crafts, as well as a great cause. It’s a perfect family outing! It runs all day on Saturday, May 3, from 11-4.
Finally, May 4 will see us celebrating the 50th birthday of Surfside Beach! This will also be an event full of family fun, so come and start early with a sunrise blessing ceremony with many local churches at the Surfside Beach Pier at 7am, Sunday, May 4. This will be a fantastic day to enjoy family festivities.
We’re gearing up for a great summer season, so call us today at Oceanfront Vacations and let us get you into the perfect condo right on the beach. You’ve got family memories to make, so what are you waiting for!!

Why Come Now?

Tuesday, April 29, 2014 – by OVR Staff
It’s April and that means one of the most beautiful seasons here in Myrtle Beach! If you’ve never been here during spring, then you are missing out on a true treasure. Here are just a few reasons you should hurry and book your vacation to Myrtle Beach NOW!

1.The Weather. It might sound cliche, but there is no better time of year for fabulous weather! April and May are incredibly beautiful months, with flowers in full bloom, very little rain, and low humidity. It doesn’t get any better than this!
2.The beach. It goes without saying that the main reason people come to Myrtle Beach is definitely the beach itself. However, if you come now during April and May, you can enjoy our beautiful beaches with far fewer people out there with you! During summer, you can barely find a piece of sand to stake your claim on, but right now you can have a section of the beach all to yourself. Who can beat that?
3.Fewer crowds. Another great thing about this time of year in Myrtle Beach is the fact that nearly all of the attractions are now open, but there aren’t really big crowds, so your wait time is very short. Also, prices are better. Restaurants are easy to get into, lines for rides are very short and you can easily access public beach access roads that are normally impossible to get to during summer.
4.Discounted prices. This is the time of year to save some money on your Myrtle Beach oceanfront condo! You can save hundreds of dollars on your condo or beach house by not waiting till summer! Take advantage of some of the deep discounts before the season gets ramped up! Prices can easily double in June.
5.Bike week. If you love your Harley or simply love seeing and hearing Harley Davidson motorcycles, then Bike Week is just for you! Come and enjoy the great food, vendors and entertainment and party with your friends! It’s the one time where there are actually far more bikes on the roads than cars, which is kind of fun to see!
These are just a few great reasons to visit Myrtle Beach in the spring. Whether it’s a full week or more of vacation or just a long weekend getaway, this is the time of year to come discover Myrtle Beach and all it has to offer! We have tons of discounts right now, so call us to reserve the perfect condo or house for you and your family!

Myrtle Beach Amusement Parks

Wednesday, April 30, 2014 – by OVR Staff
Finally! The unusually cold southern winter has ended and Myrtle Beach is gearing up for a great season! You already know that we have some of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast, but did you know that we are also in the top 10 of America’s amusement parks? It’s true! The amusement parks and new boardwalk in Myrtle Beach have been voted into the country’s top 10. We all love a thrill, so why not plan on spending a day at one of our parks this year!

A great way to spend the day with your family is to enjoy some rides together. If you’re on a budget, this is a great option. Since it’s a one-time fee, you can gain access to the park all day and enjoy your family time. It’s a great way to reconnect while you share some laughter and screams of delight on the rides! Instead of eating out in a restaurant, you can eat together in the park, or pack a picnic if you’re on a budget. It’s a great way to connect with your kids and find out what’s going on in their world! It will be a lot of fun to enjoy the old fashioned carnival atmosphere and experience the rides.

Be sure and visit the new Myrtle Beach Boardwalk too! It’s ranked among the top 3 boardwalks in the country and once you experience it, you’ll know why! There’s live entertainment along the way, lots of shops and restaurants reflecting Myrtle Beach’s years gone by, and of course, access to the best spot on the beach! Enjoy the ocean while you stroll and grab some ice cream at one of our many ice cream shops. And don’t forget to stop in at the arcade and play some games!

Myrtle Beach has tons to offer for family fun. The best part is that we pride ourselves around here on being affordable so families can keep coming back year after year. If you grew up making memories in Myrtle Beach, start making some new ones with your family now—you won’t be sorry!

Military Appreciation Days

Tuesday, May 20, 2014 – by OVR Staff
We here in Myrtle Beach love our military men and women and want to honor them in any way we can. So once again, the city of Myrtle Beach will be hosting Military Appreciation Days 2014 all through the month of May. We want to say thank you to all active duty military personnel, and their families, including all branches of the military, plus the reserves and the National Guard. They are truly our American heroes!

Many attractions and restaurants all up and down the Grand Strand will be offering discounts to military and their families. There will also be a traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, which is a moving experience for all of us to see. Montel Williams will be our Grand Marshall at our Memorial Day Parade, and the festivities will include live big band music by Andrew Thielen and his Big Band orchestra, as well as a 5k run among many other fun events. The city of Myrtle Beach will also give some our wounded warriors and their families some greatly deserved rest and relaxation by sponsoring a vacation for them.
This is the sixth year of hosting Military Appreciation Days here in Myrtle Beach and we could not be more proud or grateful for the men and women who make America’s military the best in the world! Be sure to join in the fun on Saturday, May 24th, 2014 at 10:30am when the parade starts on Ocean Blvd! Also, please feel free to come join us on May 26th at the Convention Center for the official Memorial Day Ceremony as we say thank you to our veterans. They deserve so much more than what we can give them, but we want them to feel our love and support by having as many people as possible out there to celebrate them with us!
Finally, if you’re a movie lover, be sure to visit the main branch of Chapin Memorial Library as they show military themed movies on Fridays through the month of May. Movies will start at 1:30 pm in the meeting room on the first floor of the library located at 14th Ave. North in Myrtle Beach. You can see a list of the movies online.
We’re looking forward to seeing you here in Myrtle Beach this month as we honor our military families!

Common Sense Safety Tips For Your Myrtle Beach Vacation

Wednesday, May 28, 2014 – by OVR Staff
You may have heard that the city of Myrtle Beach experienced some deadly crime this past weekend during Memorial Day events. Anywhere there is a vacation destination; there will be some level of crime. With this past weekend turning deadly here in Myrtle Beach during Atlantic Bike Fest (Black Bike Week), there has been a lot of media coverage and a very negative light has been cast over our wonderful town. Unfortunately, the events of Memorial Day weekend 2014 has left many people feeling angry, helpless and scared to come enjoy their vacation here in Myrtle Beach. We want to put your mind at ease and help you with some good common sense tips so you can feel good about bringing your family and making memories here as you are used to doing.

First of all, we want to make it clear that the deadly shootings that happened over the weekend were the result of isolated violent fights that broke out at several area motels. Due to the crowds that were here, the scene got out of hand quickly and the local law enforcement simply couldn’t respond in time. Our hearts go out to those who were affected by this senseless violence and we hope that you will not let these events prevent you from coming to enjoy your vacation here in Myrtle Beach. Our local law enforcement is among the best and they work tirelessly to help keep you and your family safe everyday!
Let’s look at some basic tips for staying safe during the crowded summer season here in Myrtle Beach.
1.Stay aware of your surroundings. This is just common sense. Always look around you and remain aware of what is happening. Stay in well lit areas and don’t venture out late at night alone.
2.Make sure you know where your children are at all times. Kids are naturally curious and can wander farther than they mean to. Set clear limits and have a meeting place that everyone knows about in case you get separated. Make sure they know how to call 911!
3.Don’t carry cash. While you might want to have a little cash on you for snacks, drinks, etc., it’s best to stick with your debit card, credit card or travelers checks. These can be traced in the even they are stolen and you’ll have a much better chance of recovering your money. Don’t carry more money than you absolutely need to at any one time.
4. Keep normal hours. Let’s face it—much of the crime that occurs happens late at night in the cover of darkness. You have a family, the best and safest place for you to be late at night is safe in your hotel or condo, sleeping. This goes for any place you vacation.
5.Get to know your surroundings. Memorize landmarks for finding your hotel and know where your local police station is located. If your hotel or condo has security guards on duty, introduce yourself and your kids and let them know of your plans so they can help keep an eye for your family.
These five tips are just basic common sense tips, but will help keep you on alert. Your family’s safety and enjoyment is our highest priority here at Oceanfront Vacations and we want you to keep coming back to Myrtle Beach year after year to make lots of wonderful memories! Please let us know how we can serve you better and with a little awareness and smart planning, you will enjoy a safe and happy vacation here in Myrtle Beach. Welcome home!

Tips For Vacation Safety In Myrtle Beach

Saturday, May 31, 2014 – by OVR Staff
With summer almost here, that means that thousands of families are coming to Myrtle Beach to enjoy that long-awaited vacation! We want you to stay safe while you play in the ocean and enjoy your family, so this article will give you some great tips to help you get the most out of your Myrtle Beach vacation.

First of all, BRING YOUR SUNSCREEN! We can’t stress it enough. The ozone layer seems to be thinner every year and this means that you will burn much faster than you might think. If you have children, remember to slather on the sunscreen often, especially after they’ve been in the water. Re-apply often to make sure they stay protected. Of course, this goes for the grownups too! You should always go for at least an SPF 50 sun block. Skin cancer is a growing problem and not one to be messed around with. Don’t let your vacation get ruined with bad sunburn!
Know where your lifeguards are! Make sure you swim where there are lifeguards, especially if you have kids. They are there to keep you safe, so be sure to understand and obey all the rules in place on the beach. Don’t swim near piers fishing areas and never jump or dive off piers. Not only is it against the law, it is also extremely dangerous.
Stay aware of rip currents! If you get caught in a rip current, stay calm and swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the riptide and can make your way to shore. Check for postings and warnings about rip currents each day.
Keep an eye on your kids at all times! With thousands of tourists on the beaches during the summer, it’s easy for a child to get lost or disoriented. Make sure your children know landmarks and practice where they should go in the event they get lost. They should always look for a lifeguard and stay put until you can get to them. Instruct your children to find a lifeguard station and not wander around. Also, make sure they know what your family members are wearing and able to describe the bathing suits, etc. Practice getting to safety with your kids before anything happens. They need to feel confident in getting to help if the need ever arises. Of course, they should ALWAYS know how to dial 911!
Sunburns can wreck a vacation in a hurry, so don’t let it happen to you! Be sure to bring lots of sunscreen and also a high quality aloe vera gel for relief after the fact. Check with your doctor before your trip about the best sunscreen for babies and be sure to bring a hat and even little sunglasses for the wee ones. Beach umbrellas will help protect you when you need a break from the sun and storing your sunscreen and burn relief gel in your cooler will offer some extra relief when needed.
Myrtle Beach is ready and waiting, so keep these tips in mind and come on down and enjoy the sand and surf—the water’s fine!!

Packing a First Aid Kit For Your Myrtle Beach Vacation

Monday, June 30, 2014 – by OVR Staff
As much as we don’t want to think about it, life happens even while on vacation, and so it’s important that you are prepared for all the little things that can happen along the way. Coming to the beach for your vacation is by far the best time of the year for many people, so just what should you do to keep you and your family safe while here in Myrtle Beach? Pack a proper first aid kit. Here are some of the things you’ll want to remember to include:

•Sunscreen! We can’t say it enough—please use proper sunscreen, especially on your kids! It should be a waterproof of at least SPF 50 and if you’re on the beach or at the pool all day, you should reapply it every two hours. Sunscreens are better than ever and should be takend seriously. The last thing you want on your vacation is to have it ruined by a bad sunburn.
•Products to treat sunburn. If you do happen to get burned, as so many people do, you’ll want to have on hand some good quality aloe vera gel, calamine lotion and cold packs to help ease the burn. If you are badly burned, you may need to visit a clinic for help. Especially if you see any blisters or water bubbles on the burn.
•Jelly fish stings: Vinegar will help to neutralize any remaining stingers left in the skin, and then you can treat the area with a baking soda paste and/or antihistamine tablets such as Benadryl to stop any swelling or allergic reactions. Calamine lotion can also help with itching.
•You might also want to include tweezers for removing stingers.
•Don’t forget the basics, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol for fever or other aches and pains, and also medications for cold or flu. While you can always go get the medicines here in Myrtle Beach, it’s nice to be prepared and have what you need should the need arise.
•Finally, bring some bandages for minor cuts or scrapes and some antibiotic ointment, as well as anti-itch cream or A&D Ointment.
If you notice your children are beginning to show signs of burning after being in the sun all day, find another indoor activity the next day! You should not allow them to stay in the sun until they heal. This is serious business and we want to make sure you and your family stay safe and enjoy your Myrtle Beach vacation! The best way to do that is to avoid at all cost getting burned. It can be done but you must be more vigilant than ever before due to our thinning ozone layer. The sun is more intense and you will burn quicker than in years past. Take our word on this—we see it all the time. Please let us know how we can help you while you’re here and of course, if you need emergency help, please don’t hesitate to call 911!
