Get Ready To Get Your Surf on In Myrtle Beach!!

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Bet you didn’t know that among all the other fabulous things to do here in Myrtle Beach, you can also get in some great surfing! While we may not be known as the world’s best surf destination, we definitely have some great waves to catch for the average or beginning surfer. The waves here in Myrtle Beach tend to be more average in size, making it much more easy for those learning to surf, or those who want to enjoy a day of surfing without a difficulty that’s too high.

Typical waves in the summer are around the knee-high mark, making it a great size for relaxed surfing or even body boarding. During the summer months, you can expect lighter winds early in the morning, and shifting winds later around noon to a more southeasterly direction. They winds can be anywhere from 10-20 knots.

The prime time to catch some surfing here in Myrtle Beach is the later summer months, into the fall. You especially won’t be disappointed if the year’s hurricane season was fairly active. In these seasons, the waves are often way over your head!

Many people often ask why the waves here in Myrtle Beach aren’t as impressive as some other areas, but looking at a map will give you the answer. You’ll find that Myrtle Beach is actually an island, separated from the continental shelf slightly. This makes our seascape more of a bay type area. The waves become more powerful the closer the seashore is to the continental shelf.

If you are learning to surf, Myrtle Beach is a perfect place! And while you can catch some great waves here, if you want more action with more difficulty, head down to Folly Beach in Charleston and see the difference. It’s just a short drive from Myrtle Beach, and you could enjoy the history and other attractions of that area and still get back to your condo in short order. The seashore in Charleston is not a bay area like Myrtle Beach, so the waves tend to be bigger there.

We might not ever be Hawaii or Fiji when it comes to being a big surfing destination, but Myrtle Beach does offer lots of fun for those wanting a laid back and fun surfing experience! Bring your kids, a board, some fins, and come get your surf on here in America’s favorite beach! If you need more info about the wave action here in Myrtle Beach, check out www.swellinfo.com.

Protecting Your Cash While on Vacation In Myrtle Beach

Friday, May 17, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Have you ever thought about how to protect your cash while on your Myrtle Beach vacation? Well, fortunately there are more convenient ways to carry cash, but these days, it’s all about the debit card, rather than carrying copious amounts of cash. I think we’ve all heard a story or two about a newly arrived tourist checking in his hotel, unpacking, and then going out for a dinner or a quick errand. Upon his return, he discovers that valuables and money left behind are now gone. We usually blame the maids in these cases, but really it could be anyone. You wouldn’t leave money lying around your house when several outside people have keys to the house would you? Well, that’s exactly what people do everyday in hotels. It’s important to keep in mind that several hotel staff people have access to your room and can get in whenever needed. For this reason alone, you should always follow the cardinal rule of vacation—NEVER leave cash in your hotel room!

Whenever possible, skip the cash and carry your debit card instead. Our society has pretty much been revolving around debit bankcards for a long time now, so this is by far the safest way to go. Banks are offering more ways than ever to protect against I.D. fraud and theft, so educate yourself on the steps to take should anything happen to your card. Also, there are ATM machines virtually everywhere now, so you can always withdraw some cash when needed. Keep in mind, however, that there are usually small charges for using ATM machines that do not belong to your home bank. These charges generally range from $1.50 to $3.00.

There’s always the old standby of travelers checks! They still spend like cash money and they are safe because they require two signatures—one when you get them dispensed to you and another matching signature at the time of purchase. Your bank can issue travelers checks free of charge in most cases.

Finally, if you do carry cash around, don’t carry a lot of it at one time. Keep it in a plastic bag inside your shoe if you’re not wearing flip-flops, or you can get a money belt so the cash is on your person at all times, rather than a pocketbook that can be left sitting around. There are people who prey on unsuspecting tourists, so don’t let it happen to you! Best advice here is to carry as little cash as possible and keep your debit and credit cards close to your body. Know what to do in the case of theft and remember that the sooner you report it, the more likely you will be to recover a stolen credit card.

Myrtle Beach is known for being a safe destination, but like any other tourist destination, there are plenty of people out there who will jump at the chance to steal your hard earned money, so don’t give them any opportunity. Follow these simple steps and enjoy your Myrtle Beach vacation!

How To Save Money on Your Myrtle Beach Vacation

Friday, May 31, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Obviously, the first major thing to do when planning a vacation is to figure out where you’re going to stay. That portion tends to take up the biggest part of the budget. But did you know that there really are some great ways to save money on lodging while in Myrtle Beach? Read on to find out how!

Money Saving Tips

1.Look for oceanview, rather than oceanfront. Believe it or not, those few extra feet can mean drastic savings! Many off-ocean rentals still give you great views of the ocean, so you’re not really sacrificing anything, other than a few extra feet to walk to the beach. If you have young kids, a house is a better option due to the space and comfort. It also ensures that they are not in the direct path of the beach without your supervision. Go in together with family or friends and renting a beach house can save you some serious dough!
2.Try to book as early as possible to avoid peak-season rates. This is common sense that applies to about anything tourist related. The earlier you book your condo or house, the better deal you will get. If you are really flexible, you can also save lots of money by booking at the very last minute. The owners are anxious to get their units rented and will cut prices in order to not have it sit empty. Of course, this only works if you can jump in the car and go at the spur of the moment.
3.Make sure you choose a place that has a kitchen and washer/dryer. Doing laundry can get costly, so it’s best to get a unit where you can do this as you go. You will also save a lot by eating in rather than dining out in restaurants all the time!

These are just a few great ways to save on your Myrtle Beach vacation. It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to take a family vacation! Why not save money early and then have extra to enjoy the attractions Myrtle Beach has to offer—you’ll be glad you did.

Check out a movie under the stars! One of our favorite things to do is to catch a good movie. It seems that the old days of drive-in movie are gone, but you can still lie under the stars and watch a movie with your significant other or your whole family! Just bring your own lawn chairs or blankets and head over to Market Common’s Valor Park. Every Wednesday at 9pm through August, you can catch a flick that’s safe for the whole family. They have vendors who sell beer and wine, as well as an array of snacks, popcorn, and drinks. You can also pack your own picnic, although the park has asked that no one bring their own alcohol. There’s plenty of parking, so come on out!

Visit the WonderWorks Museum. While it’s not free by any means, it’s pretty affordable and a great way to get out of the heat for awhile. There are lots of fun things to do and see and it’s also very educational. Definitely worth the trip if you haven’t been yet!

Check Out Hot Summer Nights. Every Wednesday at 9:30pm, you can see the Grand Strand’s largest firework display and a concert. It all happens at the corner of Mr. Joe White Ave. (10th Ave. N) and Ocean Blvd in downtown Myrtle Beach. The Hot Summer Nights concert series will feature everything from jazz and reggae to country and classic rock. There will also be fun for the whole family with face painting, street performers, stilt walkers and bouncy houses for the kids. It’s all FREE! All the fun begins at 8pm and rolls through midnight.

Broadway at the Beach. This amazing shopping complex and entertainment center has tons to enjoy without spending much. Hurricane Preparedness While In Myrtle Beach

Sunday, June 30, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Even if you’re one of our millions of treasured visitors here in Myrtle Beach, you still should be aware of hurricanes and how to prepare for them. Hurricane season is from June-November in the Atlantic basin and that means that while we don’t get them often, it is always a possibility and therefore should be taken seriously. The key is to know your stuff ahead of time. The South Carolina coast has seen its share of hurricanes through the years, although we have been blessed not to see any major ones in recent years. The weather experts are all predicting that we are overdue for a major hurricane, meaning a category 3 or higher. While chances are slim that you would be impacted while on vacation here in Myrtle Beach, it’s good to have the facts and be prepared concerning hurricane safety.

Some important things to keep in mind about hurricanes:

•First of all, if a hurricane watch is issued for our area, pay attention to official instructions and take action. This means getting necessary supplies, water, medicines, etc. before the storm hits. Each family member should have enough water for 3 days. If you are in an area that has not been evacuated, fill tubs and sinks with water and stock up on non-perishable food items to last for a few days.
•If a mandatory evacuation is called, be sure to know your evacuation routes. Signs are posted on all roadways that are used for evacuation routes. Gather enough food for 3 days that is non-perishable and take it with you in your car. Make sure your gas tank is full. If possible, this should be done ahead of time when preparations are underway.
•Find out where the shelters are in your area. If you are not able to get out of town in a timely fashion, then go to the nearest shelter and await further instructions. Shelters are usually in sturdy buildings like schools or churches. Be sure to find out if they will take pets if this is a concern.
•Do not drive through flooded roads! It only takes a few inches of water for a car to get washed away and cause people to drown. The currents in flooded creeks and streams can be extremely dangerous so never attempt to cross them.

Remember that first responders will be busy with restoring power and clearing debris from streets, etc., so it’s important to heed hurricane warnings and evacuate if you can. It might seem exciting to ride out the storm, but you will most likely lose power and have little access to outside supplies or help. It’s much better to return to the city safely, rather than risk you or your family’s well being. Chances are, you will not be impacted by a hurricane while on vacation to Myrtle Beach, but it’s always best—and smart—to know how to prepare and what to do if the event does happen. Stay safe and as always, Myrtle Beach welcomes you!

As you can see, Myrtle Beach has tons to offer, so grab your sunscreen, sense of adventure and a hearty appetite and come have a blast in the place that is the second most visited destination in the entire country!

Tips For Making Your Myrtle Beach Vacation the Best It Can Be

Wednesday, July 31, 2013 – by OVR Staff
We vacationed in Myrtle Beach every year when I was a kid. I mean, EVERY summer! That was like Christmas. You just didn’t skip the trip to the beach each summer and as a child, I remember lots of hours spent down on the beach, coming in red as a lobster and covered in sand, and then going out to do it all over again the next day. Lots of things have changed about Myrtle Beach over the past couple of decades, but all that beach time has certainly not been one of them! However, I’ve also discovered that some fairly small things can mean the difference between a safe and comfortable Myrtle Beach vacation or one where you feel like you need a separate vacation just to recover. Here are some tips to help you have the best Myrtle Beach experience possible!

Use sunscreen!! I can’t stress this enough. Even if you tan easily, your skin is still prone to ultraviolet rays that can cause damage or skin cancer down the road. Be safe and protect your skin by using good quality sunscreen of at least SPF 30. You can go even as high as SPF 50, but sunscreen with higher numbers than this can tend to trick a person into thinking they don’t need to use it as often or as much. This can actually work against you if you’re not using sunscreen as you should. Stick with a 30-50 SPF and reapply often, especially after getting wet. If you’ve ever had a bad sunburn, you won’t want to repeat it. These burns can utterly ruin a vacation to the beach. Don’t spend your day in the ER—use your sunblock!

Take a big blanket to the beach with you. If you only take towels, you won’t have anything to dry off with that isn’t full of sand. Blankets are better because they give you more space, and the towels can be just for drying off. Weigh the corners of the blanket down with heavier objects and your blanket will stay put all day!

Buy a good quality beach umbrella. You’ll be happy you did! The cheaper ones will be destroyed before the end of the day, but a good one will last you for many vacations. These beach umbrellas can really make or break your time at the beach and give everyone a break from the wind and sun. If you have small children along, give them lots of time to get under the shade, drink plenty of fluids and rest. Little ones will even take a nap under a good umbrella!

Finally, keep some plastic milk jugs or 2 liter soda bottles full of water in the car. This comes in really handy when you’ve walked through the sand, across the parking lot and don’t want to get in the car all sandy. Use the water jugs to rinse off feet and legs and keep all that extra sand OUTSIDE your car!

Don’t let anything keep you from enjoying your Myrtle Beach vacation this summer! Call us today at Oceanfront Vacations for that perfect condo or beach house to help make your family’s memories for years to come—Myrtle Beach awaits you!
